If you only read one recommendation
Buy the Dell Latitude 5400 at ₹19,550.
It is the newest silicon on the list, an 8th-gen i5, which means four real cores instead of two. That single difference matters more than anything else here. A dual-core i5 from 2016 and a quad-core i5 from 2018 feel like different categories of machine once you have twenty tabs open and a video call running.
It is at the top of the budget. Spend it anyway.
The interesting alternative
The ThinkPad T470 at ₹17,160 has an i7, and people see i7 and assume it wins.
It does not. That is a 6th-gen dual-core i7, and the 8th-gen quad-core i5 in the Latitude beats it on anything that uses more than two threads. Generation beats badge. This trips up a lot of buyers and the listings do nothing to help, because "i7" looks better in a table than "8th gen" does.
Buy the T470 for a different reason: the keyboard. ThinkPad keyboards from this era are the best keyboards ever put in a laptop, full stop, and if you type all day you will notice it every single day. It also has the hot-swappable battery design, so you can carry a spare.
That is a real trade. Cores versus keyboard. Both defensible.
The budget pick
Dell Latitude 7450 at ₹15,100.
5th-gen i5, so it is the oldest thing here. For Chrome, Office, Zoom, and note-taking it is completely fine. For anything heavier it will start to show its age within a year or two.
Buy it if the budget is genuinely hard at fifteen thousand. If you can find another four thousand rupees, the 5400 is a much longer-lived machine and you will not be shopping again in eighteen months.
What I would skip
The two ₹18,000 machines are fine but awkwardly placed. At that price you are ₹1,500 away from the 8th-gen Latitude 5400, and that ₹1,500 buys you two extra processor generations. Stretch.
One honest caveat
Everything on this list has 8GB of RAM. That is enough today and will feel tight in three years.
The good news, and this is the part that makes these machines worth buying: every one of them has an accessible RAM slot. A stick of DDR4 costs about two thousand rupees and takes ten minutes with a screwdriver. You cannot say that about a new laptop at this price, where the memory is soldered to the board and what you bought is what you die with.
